Origin and history

The Silo Tower of Calmels, located in Lacaune, is a round construction of 77 meters of circumference, erected in the middle of the 19th century. Its architecture is distinguished by a ground floor pierced with large windows in the middle of the hanger alternating with blind bays, and a row of small windows under the roof. This monument, classified as a Historical Monument, was originally used to store grains in boxes around a central pillar.

The tower was commissioned by Count Jacobé de Naurois after his marriage in 1838 with Marie-Louise de Cluzel, owner of the castle and farm of Calmels. The original cover, now disappeared, was replaced by a slate frame made by local artisan Pierre Albert. Over time, the building has been used for forage storage and occasionally as a horse ride. Today, it is fitted out in a multipurpose room.

The Silo Tower has been protected since 26 July 2007 by a registration order under the Historic Monuments. It now belongs to the municipality of Lacaune and is located on Rue de la Côte-de-Calmels. Its conservation status and location are estimated to be fair, with geographical accuracy noted 5/10 in heritage databases.
