Origin and history

La Porte de la Grosse Horloge de La Rochelle was originally a fortified gate of the medieval enclosure built at the beginning of the 12th century to protect the city. It was part of the first enclosure commanded by Guillaume X and connected the old town to the port. Originally called the Porte du Parrot (or Perrot), it had two distinct bays: a wide for carriages and a narrow for pedestrians. In the 13th century, it marked access to the eponymous suburbs, playing a key role in defending against maritime incursions.

In 1478, the door was surmounted by an octagonal bell tower with a clock and bell, thus becoming the belfry of the city in place of the Mallevault gate. This campanile, close to that of the Cailhau gate, symbolized the urban boom and the need to mark time. In 1672, the two original bays were unified into a single arcade by architect Moyse, in order to fluidize the traffic, reflecting the evolution of the logistic needs of the city.

Between 1744 and 1746, the medieval upper part was demolished and replaced by a Louis XV cartel-style structure, decorated with scientific and military attributes. This transformation, probably led by Gendrier (author of the quotations from 1743), modernized the building while maintaining its medieval base. The original turrets, once crenellated, were then crowned with allegorical trophies linked to astronomy and the sea, highlighting the historic link of La Rochelle with the maritime trade.

Ranked a historic monument in 1978, the Porte de la Grosse Clock remains an emblematic passage between the docks and the old town. It briefly housed an archaeological museum dedicated to rock templars and was even crossed by the town's ephemeral tramway. Today, it embodies both the medieval defensive heritage and the architectural metamorphoses associated with urban expansion in the 17th and 18th centuries.
