Origin and history
The house of the hamlet of La Rua, in Molines-en-Queyras, is a stone building dating from the 2nd half of the 15th century, a special feature in this region where wood traditionally dominates constructions. It was reportedly erected between 1470 and 1489 by Oronce Eme, judge-mage and vice-bailli of Briançonnais, an influential figure of the time. Its architecture, almost unchanged since its construction, bears witness to the techniques of the period and the social status of its sponsor.
Classified as a Historic Monument by order of 12 October 1995, this house is distinguished by its gemini window, a remarkable architectural element. Its precise location, although documented (cadastre address A 575), remains approximate according to the available sources, with a cartographic accuracy considered satisfactory a priori. The building, still standing, offers a rare glimpse of late medieval civilian habitat in the Southern Alps.
Unlike local wooden houses, this stone house suggests a desire for sustainability or a symbol of power. Its exceptional state of conservation, without major modifications, makes it a subject of study for historians of Alpine architecture. Sources also mention a Creative Commons license for a 1930s photograph, but the author remains unknown.
