Origin and history
The Old Mill of Bourbon-l'Archambault is an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This fortified mill, rare in the region, is distinguished by its defensive architecture, probably incorporating a 15th century enclosure tower. It underwent important restorations in the 19th century, while preserving medieval elements, such as a vaulted interior room.
The protection of the monument is partial: only the tower was listed as historical monuments by order of 9 December 1929. This status reflects its heritage importance, although the sources do not specify the exact criteria for listing. The mill is located at 13 Rue du Moulin, according to the coordinates available, but the accuracy of this location is considered poor (level 5/10).
Fortified mills, such as Bourbon-l'Archambault, played an economic and strategic role in the Middle Ages. They allowed grain to be ground while providing protection against attacks in a region marked by feudal conflicts. In the 19th century, their restoration often met practical needs or renewed interest in medieval heritage, in the context of rural modernization and the enhancement of local heritage.
