Origin and history

The Castle of Plantay, founded around 1305 by the knight Hugues of Plantay, was the center of a seigneury located in the present department of Ain. This medieval fortress, of which only a cylindrical tower in brick and limestone remains, illustrates the defensive architecture of the Dombes in the early 14th century. The tower, accompanied by an annex building, was listed as historic monuments in 1991.

The seigneury of Plantay originally belonged, in the 13th century, to the family of Saint-Didier, vassal of the sires of Beaujeu and Thoire-Villars. In 1305, Humbert de Thoire-Villars inferred the estate at Hugues du Plantay, whose descendants kept it until the 15th century. The castle was partially burned in 1460 by the troops of the Duke of Bourbon, leaving only the present tower, a symbol of his military past.

Over the centuries, the seigneury changed hands by alliances and sales: Claudine du Plantay brought in dowry to Guy III of the Palud in 1402, then to John of the Saix. After several transmissions, including that to Jean de la Palud in 1544, the castle lost its defensive role. In 2024, the Comunidad de Communes de la Dombes acquired it as an educational and tourist site, marking a new stage in its history.

The tower of the Plantay, of circular shape, is characteristic of the 14th century Dombes dungeons, such as those of Montellier or Chavagneux. Built in brick with limestone elements (mâchicoulis, frames), it bears witness to the fortification techniques of the period. Its location, west of the village near the Great Châtel pond, reflects its strategic role in the medieval landscape.
