Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-Recouvrance chapel of Ploemel, built in the heart of the sixteenth century, is a remarkable testimony of Breton religious architecture of the Renaissance. Sponsored by the Lodrec family, a local notable, it was completed in 1560 as evidence of a gothic inscription on the north sandière, mentioning the names of Jean Lodrec and François Lodrec, as well as the parish priest of the time, Dom Ch. The Gartz.

The 16th century in Brittany is marked by an increase in religious constructions, often financed by aristocratic or bourgeois families wishing to display their piety and power. The chapel is part of this movement, mixing late Gothic elements, such as the foothills, with Renaissance influences visible in the frame and decorations. This stylistic syncretism reflects the artistic transitions of the period, between medieval tradition and Italian modernity.

The building underwent modifications shortly after its construction, as evidenced by the traces of recovery in the walls and the differences in moulding. An inscription of 1563 indicates that Jean Le Lozdrec, probably a descendant of the original sponsors, had the bell tower erected. In the 19th century, observers such as Rosenzweig described a square turret covered with dardoise, now extinct, probably destroyed in the early 20th century.

The chapel was also extended, and some openings, such as the south gate, were condemned or modified to adapt to urbanization. The French Revolution and the upheavals of the 19th century saved the chapel relatively, although its parish enclosure, visible on the cadastral plans of 1811 and 1845, gradually disappeared. In the 20th century, the space around the monument was converted into a pedestrian area, integrating the neighboring presbytery.

The murals, rediscovered in 1995, dated from the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century, reveal poignant scenes of the Passion of Christ, adding a major artistic dimension to the place. Since its inscription as a historic monument in 1925, the Notre-Dame-de-Recouvrance Chapel has enjoyed heritage protection that has allowed its preservation. Today, it remains an occasional place of worship and a tourist site appreciated for its history, architecture and frescoes.

Documentary resources, such as those of the Merimée Base or the Observatory of Religious Heritage, as well as local initiatives, help to perpetuate its memory and make it a symbol of Morbihan heritage.
