Origin and history

The ramparts of Chalon-sur-Saône constitute a defensive complex built in the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. Located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté, they testify to the military needs of the time, in a city then strategic for river and land trade. Their architecture reflects the fortification techniques in force during the Renaissance, adapted to the progress of artillery.

Classified as a historic monument by decree of 28 December 1937, these ramparts are now protected for their heritage value. Their inscription in the Merimée base and their precise location (especially around Mathias Avenue) make it a key element of the Chalonian urban landscape. The property of the municipality ensures their preservation, although their conservation status and accessibility are not detailed in the available sources.

At the time of their construction, Chalon-sur-Saône was a dynamic city, marked by its role as a crossroads between northern and southern France. The ramparts served not only to protect the population from conflict, but also to control trade, including via the Saône. Their construction is part of a broader context of modernization of urban defences, characteristic of the Burgundy towns of the Renaissance.
