Origin and history
Luanges Castle, located in the town of Urzy (Nièvre), is a building built between 1865 and 1866 by architect Levy Launay, in a Gothic style typical of the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. It replaces an old razed house in 1864, the foundations of which served as the basis for the new construction. This project is part of the romantic current of the era, marking a return to medieval forms revisited with modern techniques.
The park surrounding the castle was designed by two renowned landscape architects: Choulot de Lavanne and Fricaud. Their intervention reflects the importance attached to the harmony between architecture and nature, typical of the great Burgundy estates of this period. The site, including the castle, its communes, a greenhouse and fence walls, was inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 27 June 2008, thus recognizing its heritage value.
Together, with its neogothic facades and its structured park, illustrates the influence of English models in the development of green spaces in France in the 19th century. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), and its official address, 761 Château de Luanges, 58130 Urzy, confirms its anchoring in the Nièvre department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
