Origin and history
Château des Chances is a medieval building located in the commune of Haies, in the Rhône department, at the foot of the Pilat massif. Today, this fortress remains only a half-burdened tower and some fragments of walls, silent testimonies of its past. The remains, though reduced, allow to situate its historical importance in this region marked by the reliefs of Pilat and the Rhône valleys.
The first written mention of the Château des Chances dates back to a charter dated April 970, known as Charter Savigny. This document evokes a certain Rudolph, a member of the powerful house of Lavieu, designated as the owner of the castle at that time. This reference attests to the seniority of the site and its role in the seigneurial dynamics of the region in the 10th century.
The present state of the ruins suggests progressive abandonment or partial destruction, although the causes and precise chronology of this decline are not detailed in the available sources. The castle, by its strategic position at the foot of Pilat, was to play a role in the supervision or control of local communication routes, typical of medieval fortresses of that time.
No additional information is available to accurately reconstruct the construction stages, architectural changes or significant events related to this castle. Future research could shed more light on its history, notably through the study of medieval charters or targeted archaeological excavations.
