Origin and history
The castral motte of Venables is a medieval vestige located in the department of Eure in Normandy. It stands on the town of Venables, south of the department, and overlooks the Seine valley. This site illustrates the typical defensive architecture of the Middle Ages, with a remarkable pitch, suggesting a construction prior to 1042, when the Dukes of Normandy limited the height of fortifications.
The fief of Venables was mentioned in 1055, when the bishop of Beauvais, Drogon, entrusted the lands to his nephew Gilbert after the death of Mauger de Venables, former local lord. This transmission reflects the feudal dynamics of the time, where family and ecclesiastical alliances played a key role in territorial management. The motte, probably erected before that date, bears witness to the strategic importance of the site.
The feudal motte was partially listed as historical monuments by order of 3 October 1983, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Today owned by the municipality, it remains a significant example of Norman medieval fortifications, although its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified in the available sources. Its location, near the Place de la Libération in Venables, makes it a local point of interest linked to regional history.
