Origin and history
The Hôtel de Chassey is a monument located in Semur-en-Auxois, in the department of the Côte d'Or (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté). Built in the 18th century, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, marked by the elegance and symmetry of private hotels. Its facades, roofs, as well as its commons, its courtyard with gate, and terraced gardens, were protected by a classification under the Historical Monuments in 1962.
Semur-en-Auxois, a medieval fortified town, was in the 18th century a dynamic administrative and commercial center in Burgundy. Private hotels, such as Chassey's, reflected the social status of their owners, often from the nobility or the affluent bourgeoisie. These urban residences served both as a place of representation and comfort, integrating green spaces and outbuildings for domestic workers.
Their preservation today is evidence of the evolution of lifestyles and urban planning in this region.
