Origin and history
The castle of Grézan found its origins in the 12th century as the commanding officer of the Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Originally a simple agricultural land, it became a strategic place for hospital knights, before being profoundly remodelled in the 19th century. This site, marked by its religious and military past, illustrates the evolution of the uses of medieval commanderies in Occitanie.
In the 19th century, the estate was transformed into a vineyard, reflecting the growing importance of viticulture in the Hérault. Between 1820 and 1888, the old building was taken over and completely redesigned in 1890 by Gabriel Mirepoix. The latter entrusted the works to architect Louis Garros, who erected a creneled enclosure of several hundred meters, explicitly inspired by the style of Carcassonne. This metamorphosis into a "fancy fortress" reflects the romantic taste of the period for neo-gothic and medievalism.
The architectural complex, including facades, roofs and park, was listed as historical monuments on 22 July 1993. This protection recognizes the heritage value of a site combining hospital heritage and picturesque 19th century reinterpretation. The castle of Grézan thus embodies a unique superposition of medieval history and eclectic aesthetics, characteristic of the reconstructions of the Second Empire and the Third Republic.
