Origin and history

The Méré Tower, located in the commune of Chaussy (Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France), is a 15th century monument. It is one of the few architectural testimonies of this period preserved in the region, marked by a transition between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The site includes, in addition to the tower itself, a historic staircase as well as a section of courtine (wall of enclosure) still visible, elements protected since 1927.

Ranked a Historical Monument by decree of 24 October 1927, the Tower of Mere illustrates the strategic importance of defensive constructions in the rural landscape of France after the end of the Hundred Years War. Although the local archives do not specify its exact use (seigneurial residence, watchtower or fortified agricultural dependency), its architecture reflects the need for protection and control of the territory at a time when the Île-de-France, close to Paris, was a major political and military issue. The approximate location of the site, noted as "passable" (level 5/10), suggests that uncertainties remain as to its exact right-of-way or possible missing ancillary structures.

Today, the Méré Tower is located on the estate of the Meray Farm, at the approximate address of the 5257 road of the Meray Farm. Its current condition and access conditions (visit, rental, accommodation) are not documented in available sources. The monument remains, however, a heritage landmark for the commune of Chaussy, administratively linked to the arrondissement of Pontoise and the Val-d'Oise department under the code Insee 95150.
