Origin and history

The Hotel de la Bourse de Toulouse was erected in 1836 by architects Bonnal and Raynaud, on the site of the former Merchant Exchange (1781). This project was born after the State refused to give up the Benedictine convent of the Daurade, forcing the municipality to build a new building in the Place de la Bourse. The building, rare in Palladian style in Toulouse, is distinguished by its two registers, its ionic columns and its imposing attic.

The base, rhythmic by openings in full hanger and pilasters, contrasts with the windows on the first floor, surmounted by a cornice. This monument, classified in 1975 for its facades and roofs, embodies Italian influence in the 19th century Toulouse architecture. It replaces the Hotel de Bastard, the former headquarters of the Merchant Exchange, marking a transition to a more modern institution.

Construction reflects tensions between the city and the state, as well as the adaptation of urban spaces to economic needs. The use of pink brick, typical of Toulouse, and neoclassical elements underline a desire for prestige. Today, the building remains a testimony to the commercial and architectural history of the city.
