Origin and history
The château de la Chasseigne, located in the commune of Saint-Parize-le-Châtel in the Nièvre, finds its origins in the 15th century with a seigneurial mansion. Today, only the two tower porch remains, connected by a gallery to the modern castle. This site was originally a strong house protected by ditches and enclosures, typical of local medieval defensive buildings.
In 1868, Count Armand de Montrichard began the construction of a new neo-Renaissance castle, according to the plans of architect Levy. This building partially replaces the old structures, marking a transition between the medieval heritage and Renaissance-inspired architecture. The remains of the 15th century, though partial, still bear witness to this dual historical identity.
In the 21st century, the château de la Chasseigne faced challenges of preservation. In 2020, the Association Les Amis de la Chasseigne is founded to save the building, whose state requires urgent restoration. This project is part of a local dynamic of valorisation of heritage, stressing the cultural and historical importance of the site for the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
