Origin and history

Margeleix Castle, located in the eponymous hamlet on the town of Puy-Malsignat (Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), was probably built in the 17th century as a dwelling, without a defensive vocation. Its sober architecture, organised around a two-level rectangular house body, reflects this residential destination from the beginning. The interiors preserve painted decorations and carved woodwork, especially in the two rooms classified Historic Monuments in 1984, Testimonials of its initial layout.

In the 18th century, the castle welcomed the Marquis de La Fayette for part of his childhood. Its owner, Antoine Gilbert François Nicolas Fourreton, military preceptor of the future war hero of the American Independence, makes it a place linked to the history of this iconic figure. Although this period is little documented, it gives the site a significant historical dimension, associated with the local nobility and the education of elites.

The chapel of the castle, transformed into a memorial of deportations on February 27, 2010, has since been home to a commemorative plaque and stained glass windows created by artisans of Aubusson (Jean Fourton, Jean-François Guinot, Bernard Battu, Michel Cancalon). These works, inspired by local tapestries, symbolize resilience to the tragedies of the twentieth century. The estate, including dairy, supply and pond, as well as the courtyard well, has been partially protected under the Historic Monuments since 1984.

The architecture of the castle, without fortifications, illustrates the transition from castles to aristocratic residences with an agricultural and social vocation. The outbuildings (granges, attices) highlight its role as economic center for the estate, while the interior decorations—painted beams, ground carpentry—show a typical beautification of the noble houses of modern times.
