Origin and history

The Musée de l'Académie de la Val d'Isère was founded in the foundation of the Academy itself, created on 29 January 1865 in Moutiers (Savoie). Recognized as a public utility on 21 May 1877, this institution devoted itself to the study and development of Savoyard heritage, in particular that of the valley of Tarentaise. Its founding statutes underline its commitment to historical, archaeological and scientific issues, with particular attention to the former territory of the Métropole de Tarentaise, corresponding today to the arrondissements of Albertville and Moutiers.

The museum's collections, made up by members of the Academy since 1865, reflect this heritage mission. They cover objects ranging from protohistory to 1860, illustrating the local history of Darantasia (former name of Moutiers). Among the emblematic pieces are an ex-voto dedicated to Mantounos, god of the sources of Salins-les-Thermes, as well as elements related to the Royal Salines. These artifacts demonstrate the historical and archaeological significance of the region, particularly during the Gallo-Roman period.

The museum, labeled Musée de France, is located in Moutiers, although its exact address varied (23 Place Saint-Pierre or 196bis Grande rue). He remains a key player in the dissemination of knowledge about local and regional history, in connection with historical monuments such as the Bishopric of Tarentaise. Its website (academie.sup.fr) and its contact details (telephone: 04 79 24 04 23) facilitate access to its resources.
