Origin and history
The Château de Vauvillers, located in the municipality of the same name in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is an 18th century building characterized by mirrored architecture. It consists of two identical and parallel buildings: the main house body and the commons, both covered with varnished tiles. This style reflects the influence of the aristocratic constructions of the time, combining functionality and aesthetics.
Built for Gaspard de Clermont-Tonnerre, Marquis de Cruzy and de Vauvillers, this castle was the residence of a high dignitary of the court of Louis XV, the latter being the dean of the king's Marshals. The building thus illustrates the social and political prestige of its sponsor, typical of the provincial elites under the Old Regime.
The castle was partially included in the inventory of the Historic Monuments on 22 February 1980, a protection specifically covering the concierge, stairway, elevations, support ramps and roofs. Today, it houses the city hall of Vauvillers, showing a frequent heritage conversion for French castles.
The protected elements also include the facades, the roofs of the two main buildings, as well as the interior staircase of the southern building, remarkable for its wrought iron ramp. These architectural details highlight the care given to interior decoration, characteristic of the noble mansions of the eighteenth century.
Located in the Haute-Saône department, the castle is part of a rural landscape marked by france-comtoise history. Its exact address, 9001 Place du Château, makes it a central point of the municipality, accessible and integrated into local life.
