Origin and history
The engraved stele of Guib is a prehistoric monument located in the commune of Ploemel, Morbihan (Bretagne). This carved stone, dated from the Neolithic, illustrates the artistic and symbolic traditions of the agrarian societies of the time. It was officially recognized as a Historic Monument by a registration order in July 2023, highlighting its heritage importance.
The site is located at the approximate address of 14 Impasse Kerluhan, on an identified cadastral parcel (section H, No.660). Although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10), this stele remains a rare testimony of neolithic cultural expressions in Brittany. The available data come mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, without further details on its original use or meaning.
Ploemel, like other Breton municipalities, houses several prehistoric remains, reflecting an ancient human occupation. The engraved steles, often associated with funeral or territorial functions, mark the landscape and offer clues about the beliefs and social organization of neolithic populations. Their preservation makes it possible to study the cultural transitions between Mesolithic and metal age.
