Origin and history
The Saint-Blaise church of L'Hôpital-Saint-Blaise, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, was built in the 12th century by the canons of Sainte-Christine du Somport Abbey. It served as a mercy hospital for pilgrims on the way from Pyrenean piedmont to Santiago de Compostela. Today, only the church remains of this medieval hospital foundation.
Ranked a historic monument in 1888 and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, the church illustrates Romanesque architecture influenced by Moorish art. Its Greek cross plan, double-storey bell tower and carved portal (Christ in majesty surrounded by a tetramorph) bear witness to this transitional period between the 11th and 12th centuries. The oak frame, partially original, protects an interior marked by a cross arch dome and capitals decorated with vegetal interlaces.
The building preserves remarkable liturgical furniture, including a 17th century Baroque high altar dedicated to Saint Blaise, patron of the doctors. The stone baptismal fonts, the chestnut stand and the tombstones of the Mercatbide family (18th century) complete this heritage. The facade, sober, rests on a primitive square tower, while the stone claustras recall the influence of the Caliphate of Lérida on the other side of the Pyrenees.
The church also symbolizes medieval hospital history: founded as a stop for poor pilgrims, it reflects Christian charity and cultural exchanges between Aquitaine and Iberian peninsula. The restorations revealed hybrid constructive techniques, mixing local traditions (acacia shingles) and transpyreneal inputs (geometrical backgrounds).
Today a communal property, the church remains an active place of worship and a major testimony of Aquitaine Romanesque art. Its inscription in UNESCO underlines its role in the jacquarian network, while its medieval structure, exceptionally preserved, makes it a case of study for historians of architecture.

Future
The Church of Saint-Blaise is one of the 71 monuments as well as 7 portions of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Chemins de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France". It is located on the Piedmont Way, a deviation from Via Tolosana, which joins Saint-Jean-pied-de-port, before crossing the Pyrenees.
To enhance the heritage, the municipality has set up a tourist offer allowing visitors a better discovery of the site:
- Guided audio tour: 8min, free pricing. Guided and autonomous tour with light sets
- Sound & Light show: 20 min 5?/adult 2.5?/child. Total immersion in the history of the village thanks to projections on the internal walls of the church. The secrets of architecture are revealed through 3D animations and light games.
