Origin and history
The Royal Caserne of Lauterbourg, built in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, embodies the introduction of the principles of French classical architecture in Alsace. It follows the repetitive model advocated by Vauban, based on a modular "barrack corps": a base cell that can be multiplied as needed. In Lauterbourg, five modules were planned, but only three were produced. This system reflects a pragmatic approach, tailored to the constraints of the field and the available resources.
The building retains remarkable interior elements, such as parquet floors, stair ramps, sandstone frames of doors and windows, as well as a low frame. Dependence also remains. Awning on the facade, later added, testifies to its reuse as a tobacco factory in the 19th century, marking a functional evolution of the building. These details highlight both its military heritage and its adaptation to local economic needs.
Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 2 October 2023, the Royal Caserne is now owned by the municipality of Lauterbourg. Its inscription concerns the entire building, located 5 rue de la Caserne, as well as its cadastral plot. This status protects a rare example of Alsatian military architecture, mixing Vaubanian rigour and classical influences, while preserving traces of its later uses.
