Origin and history
The Château de la Pinelais is a 19th century building located in Saint-Père-en-Retz, in the Loire-Atlantique department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built around 1870 by Commander Larivière, it replaces a former mansion owned by Marie-Nicolas Saulnier de La Pinelais, an official painter of the Navy. This estate extends over a park of 7 hectares, close to the Jade Coast and about 40 km from Nantes.
The site occupies a historic location, marked by the previous presence of a mansion linked to a recognized artist. Marie-Nicolas Saulnier de La Pinelais, owner of the premises before the construction of the present castle, was a painter specialized in maritime representations, suggesting a link between the estate and the naval universe. Commander Larivière, at the origin of the present building, has thus perpetuated a local tradition by erecting this castle.
Today, the Pinelais estate remains an architectural testimony of the 19th century in the Loire-Atlantique. Its park and location close to the coast make it an emblematic place of the region, between historical heritage and preserved natural surroundings. The castle is also referenced in the lists of local monuments, stressing its importance in the heritage of the Niger.
