Origin and history

The Château de Colombier-le-Vieux, also known as the Château de Belle Combe, is an emblematic monument to the north of Ardèche. Its construction began in the 13th century under the impulse of the Belle Combe, notably Alix de Belle Combe and Arthaud de Montchal (mentioned in 1282), to embody the seigneury of Colombier-le-Vieux. This strategic site changes hands several times over the centuries, reflecting local feudal alliances and dynamics.

In 1309, the seigneury passed to Arnaud de Fay, seigneur of Etables, before being acquired by the powerful De Joyeuse family at the end of the 14th century, through a matrimonial alliance. The land then became partly the seigneury of Bozas. The castle remained in this line until 30 June 1910, when it was sold to the Entressangle brothers of Etables: Abbé Victor Entressangle and Paul Entressangle, the father of Madame Roche. This period marks a turning point towards private and family property.

On September 5, 1997, a new major transaction took place: Madame Roche ceded the castle to Régis Desbos. Meanwhile, the building was recognized for its heritage value and listed as a historic monument in 1927, ensuring its preservation. Today, the castle bears witness to nearly eight centuries of history, from medieval origins to modern transformations, to noble families that marked the Ardèche.

Architecturally, the castle of Belle Combe embodies the characteristics of the ardèche fortresses, with a dominant position on the territory. Its designation as historical monuments underlines its importance in the regional heritage, alongside other buildings classified in the department. Archives and external links, such as the Merimée base, offer additional resources to deepen its history.
