Origin and history

The Meurchin Farm, located in Sailly-lez-Lannoy, is a historical monument dating back to the 10th century. The site is cited for the first time in the 12th century, when the village had three castral mots, including that of Meurchin, the last remaining. This motte, surrounded by water ditches, is 50 meters in diameter and is kept at a height of 5 to 6 meters. Today, it is transformed into a garden of pleasure and reflects the strategic importance of the place in the Middle Ages.

The lower courtyard houses a farm whose buildings, rebuilt after a fire in 1720, are organized around a courtyard accessible by a porch surmounted by a dovecote. The latter, rebuilt in 1980, and a former brewery dating back to the 1860s complete the architectural ensemble. The farm, with its outbuildings, illustrates the evolution of agricultural and craft activities on this site throughout the centuries.

The monument, completely protected by an order of 14 April 2008, includes the castral mound, the farm buildings, the courtyard and surrounding parcels. This classification highlights the heritage value of a site that combines medieval remains and rural architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries.
