Origin and history

The Contades mansion, also known as villa Osterloff, is a picturesque villa built between 1901 and 1902 by architect Albert Nadler for entrepreneur Otto Gunderloch. Located on the edge of the Contades Park in Strasbourg, it is distinguished by its eclectic style, combining historical references from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This villa is one of the last private residences bordering the park, built in 1764, and bears witness to the bourgeois architecture of the early 20th century.

Originally owned by Otto Gunderloch, master carrier and stone tailor, the villa was sold in 1929 to architect Waldemar Osterloff, whose name it bears for several decades. Its facades, roofs, terraces and the entrance gate with its two gates are inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 30 December 1985. The villa changes hands several times: acquired in 2009 by the entrepreneur Joël Apolloni, it is restored and renamed "Manor House of Contades", before being sold in 2021.

The villa illustrates the evolution of the Strasbourg heritage, moving from a private bourgeois residence to a protected monument, while preserving remarkable architectural elements. Its restoration in 1993, followed by Joël Apolloni's work in the 21st century, preserved its historic character. Today, it remains a significant example of Alsatian eclectic architecture, between medieval heritage and renaissant influences, in an emblematic district of Strasbourg.
