Grange (Case C 1126): entry by order of 21 December 1989

Origin and history

Bengy-sur-Craon's barn, listed as a Historic Monument, illustrates a traditional architectural model of Berrichonne Champagne. Built in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its wooden frame, which supports the entire structure, and its drip walls made of limestone, non-carrying stones. The two-sided roof, supplemented by a rump on the awning, is a major feature of this type of rural building. Inside, a central longitudinal nave, framed with two sides, organizes the space, while vertical poles anchored in the ground distribute the weight of the frame. These posts, arranged in reverse U at regular intervals, structure the interior space functionally.

The rear part of the barn was partially demolished to enlarge the space, thus changing its original appearance. This monument reflects the rural construction techniques of the time, where the structure played a leading role in the stability of the building. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 21 December 1989 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its testimony of the traditional agricultural practices of the region.

The location of the barn, at the 6 road from Nevers to Bengy-sur-Craon in the Cher, makes it a key part of the rural heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire. Its conservation status and location accuracy, assessed as fair (note 5/10), indicate a need for valorization to preserve this 18th century testimony. The barn, although protected, remains a modest building but representative of local agricultural history, where utility buildings played a central role in the organisation of farms.
