Origin and history
Chauvirey-le-Châtel Castle is a medieval building built in the 13th century west of an older building. It is part of the two castles of the seigneury of Chauvirey, with the Château-Dessous, following a territorial division. This fortified site illustrates the local feudal organization, where the lords divided their lands and defences to better control them.
In the 17th century, the castle, then in poor condition, was rebuilt according to the plans of architect Jacques Gentillâtre. However, as early as the 18th century, it was abandoned and gradually fell into ruin. Today, there is only one wall left, a witness to his past. The site was listed as a historic monument in 1994, recognizing its heritage importance despite its state.
The castle reflects the architectural transformations between the Middle Ages and the modern era, marked by reconstructions and abandonments linked to political and social changes. His history is documented notably by the works of historian Liliane Châtelet-Lange, who studied the role of Jacques Gentillâtre in the castles of the region, such as those of the Thons and Chauvirey.
