Origin and history

The Château de la Chaussade, located in Guérigny in the Nièvre department, was built in 1746 for Baron Pierre Badaud de la Chaussade. The latter, the creator of the local forges, has carried out a vast urban planning project still visible today. The 18th-century castle consists of two wings with ground floor and upper floor, as well as a third wing parallel to the south wing. It served as both a residence and an administrative place for forges.

Between 1880 and 1971, the site specialized in the manufacture of chains and anchors for the navy and commercial ships. The castle then housed the employees of the forge master as well as the administrative services. Since 2002, it has been listed as historic monuments, including the castle in its entirety, its outbuildings, the park, and adjacent courtyards.

In 2021, a square named United States Independence Square was inaugurated at the entrance to the castle, marking a symbolic recognition of its historic importance. The castle is now managed by a public institution, although its current status (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
