Origin and history

The Château de Villemomble is a large house built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century on plans of architects Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart and Henri Piètre, at the location of an old Renaissance castle. He was commissioned by Louis-Philippe d'Orléans for his mistress Étiennette Marie Périne Le Marquis, who became "Mme de Villemomble" after the acquisition of the lands in 1767, and he embodied the architecture of the Folies with a central body and two wings. The estate then included the seigneuries of Villemomble, Avron, and Noisy-le-Sec.

Between 1800 and 1875, the castle frequently changed owners, passing into the hands of notables such as Nicolas Bourelle de Sivry, Rodolphe Haller, or Denis François Papin. In the 19th century, part of the park was even owned by Louis-Philippe I, king of the French. From 1887 to 1980, the castle served as a town hall before being restored in 2003 by a local association dedicated to safeguarding the city's heritage.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1986 for its facades, roofs and interior decorations (vestibulum, oval lounge), the castle today hosts exhibitions and cultural activities. Its history reflects the social transformations of the region, from aristocratic seigneury to municipal use, before becoming a place dedicated to local memory. Public transport (RER E, bus) now facilitates access from Paris.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Mérimée base) highlight its role in Villemomble's urban planning, marked by the construction of a new town hall in the 1980s. The association Les Amis du château perpetuates its value through publications and genealogical research, anchoring the monument in contemporary cultural life.
