Origin and history

The Old Moulin de Vernon is an ancient 16th century water mill, built on horseback on two piles of a 12th century medieval bridge linking Vernon to Vernonnet (now merged). Located on the banks of the Seine, it is the last witness of the mills that existed there, transformed into a half-timbered house. Its location on Talus Island and its architecture make it a classified site since 1943, integrated into the general inventory of cultural heritage.

Between 1925 and 1930, the mill belonged to composer Jean Nouguès, who organized evenings there on a nearby moored barge, cast in 1927. Sold in 1930 to the American William Griffin, he suffered damage during the Second World War, requiring renovation by the city after 1947. Today, it is one of the few buildings built on a bridge in France, immortalized by Claude Monet in 1883 and highlighted in 2017, awarded for its lighting.

The site, including the mill and bridge, was listed as historical monuments by order of 22 September 2025. He also served as the setting for the film Les Mysteres de Paris (1962) with Jean Marais. Two postal stamps, published in 1979 and 1997, celebrate this emblematic monument of Vernon and Eure.
