Origin and history

The archaeology museum of L'Aiguillon derives its origin from the archaeological excavations carried out on the medieval site of the castle of Montsegur, a high place of Catharism. This research, conducted by the Grame (Groupe de Recherches Archéologiques de Montségur et de ses environs) under the supervision of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs, brought together a wealth of objects dating mainly from the thirteenth century. There are clothing accessories such as belt buckles, weapons, balls, as well as bend coins struck by the Counts of Toulouse, the Lords of Melgueil, and the Archbishop of Narbonne. These artifacts illustrate the daily life and conflicts of this troubled period, marked by the crusade against the Albigois and the fall of Catharism.

Complementing these medieval vestiges, the museum also exhibits prehistoric objects discovered in the caves of the surrounding area, as well as pieces of use during the 15th to 18th centuries. These collections allow us to trace the evolution of techniques, trades and lifestyles in the region over centuries. Located in the building of the town hall of Montségur, close to the castle (1.5 km from the parking lot), the museum is positioned as an essential step in understanding local history. His label "Museum of France" attests to the quality of his collections, centered on archaeology, ethnology of trades, and the history of Catharism.

The location of the museum, in the very village of Montsegur (code Insee 09003, Ariège department), makes it a strategic place for visitors wishing to deepen their knowledge of the emblematic site of the castle. The objects exhibited, such as the deniers of the Counts of Toulouse or the tools of everyday life, offer a concrete testimony to the economic exchanges, craft techniques and conflicts that marked this border region between the county of Foix and the Occitan territories. The accuracy of its location, noted as "passable" (5/10), reflects the challenges of geolocation in this mountainous area, but its official address (32 village, 09300 Montsegur) allows visitors to find it easily.
