Origin and history

The Saint-Pierre de Larochemillay church, built between 1869 and 1870, is a major achievement of the architect Anatole de Baudot. This monument illustrates its archaeological approach inspired by Romanesque and Ottoman styles, while integrating a decoration signed by the artists of the Société Saint-Grégoire de Tours. The authenticity of its architecture, decorations and furniture makes it a rare testimony of this period.

The church is closely linked to the castle and the family of Ferté-Meun, highlighting its anchor in local history. Classified as a Historic Monument in July 2022, it is fully protected, including its cadastral plot and decorative elements. Its location in Larochemillay, in the Nièvre, makes it an emblematic heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.

Anatole de Baudot, an innovative architect, applied his theories on the reinterpretation of medieval forms, while Société Saint-Grégoire de Tours contributed to its ornamentation. This project reflects a unique artistic collaboration, combining architecture and decoration in a unified vision. The church remains today a remarkable example of 19th century eclecticism, preserved in its original state.
