Origin and history

The Souquet-Marteau hotel is a mansion located in 38 Place du Général-de-Gaulle in Etaples, in the Pas-de-Calais department. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries, it belonged to the Souquet-Marteau family, whose son Gustave lived there. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the period, with a facade and roof protected since 1984 for their elevation and exterior decoration.

Between 1803 and 1805, the hotel welcomed major historical figures: Marshal Ney lived there, while Napoleon I made two visits (29 June and 31 December 1803) as part of the preparations for a landing in England. These events mark its role in the military and political history of the region under the First Empire.

The Souquet-Marteau hotel, which was listed as a historic monument in 1984, bears witness to both the local architectural heritage and Napoleonic strategies. Its protection relates specifically to the exterior elements (facade, roof, decoration), reflecting their historical and aesthetic value. Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum, Merimée base) confirm its importance in the urban landscape of Etaples.
