Origin and history

The covered market of Aix-en-Othe, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, replaces an old stone hall demolished in 1860. Designed by architect Aristide Fortier and built in 1889, this metal structure is inspired by the achievements of Victor Baltard, famous for his Parisian halls. It is distinguished by its 20 exterior columns in cast iron and its brick walls with a diamond decoration, topped with reinforced glass plates.

The hall, restored in 1997, has been listed as historic monuments since 1995. Its metal frame supports a zinc roof lined with fir, illuminated by a central lantern. Four fan-glassed portals rhythmize its facades. This market, ranked among the 100 most beautiful markets in France, illustrates the rise of industrial constructions in the 19th century and their integration into the local heritage.

The building combines innovative materials for the era – cast iron, iron and brick – reflecting the technological advances of the industrial revolution. Its unique nave plan, supported by 8 inner columns, optimizes space for commercial activities. The hall remains today a symbol of the economic and social life of Aix-Villemaur-Pâlis, while at the same time testifying to the architectural know-how of the nineteenth century.
