Origin and history

The Musée de l'Avallonnais Jean Després was founded in 1862 by the Société d'études d'Avallon (SEA). This museum, originally created to collect and preserve local collections, covers various fields such as archaeology, fine arts, ethnology and natural sciences. Its establishment in an old 17th-century college, partially medieval and redesigned in 1880, adds a historical dimension to its architectural framework.

Collection management was transferred to the city of Avallon around 1945, marking a new stage in its development. The museum is distinguished by its eclectic collections, including foreign antiques (Greek, Roman, Egyptian), national archaeological objects (from Prehistory to the Middle Ages), as well as modern and contemporary works of art. It also houses ethnological collections from South-East Asia, such as the Yao, Mien and Mun collection, as well as goldsmith's fonds, notably those of Jean Despres.

Among its assets, the museum highlights pieces from local excavations, such as those of Arcy-sur-Cure led by Abbé Parat, or objects linked to Gallo-Roman and Merovingian sites. He also exhibited works by renowned artists such as Georges Rouault, Antoine Vestier, and sculptures by Georges Loiseau-Bailly and Pierre Vigoureux. This diverse heritage reflects both regional history and broader cultural influences, while registering in a building full of history, former medieval and modern college.

The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is located at 5 rue du Collège in Avallon, in the department of Yonne. Its exact address and location, although specified, are noted as having fair accuracy (level 5/10) according to the available data. This place remains a central point for the dissemination of the cultural and historical heritage of Avallonnais and its surroundings.
