Origin and history
The Cheix Bridge is a medieval bridge located on horseback in the communes of La Bazeuge and Dinsac, in the Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 13th and 14th centuries, it has a Gothic architectural style, characterized by its three arches. With a length of about ten metres, it spans the Brame River at Cheix. This book illustrates medieval civil engineering, typical of the commercial or local roads of the time.
The Cheix Bridge was listed as historic monuments by order of 9 February 1990. This protection recognizes its heritage value and its role in local history. Although its construction dates back to the Middle Ages, little precise information remains about its initial use or possible sponsors. Today, there is still a material testimony of exchanges and trips in this rural region of Limousin.
The location of the bridge at the border between two municipalities reflects its historic importance as a crossing point. The Brame, a river that it crosses, may have served as a natural boundary or a route of communication. The site, although modest in size, offers a representative example of the small medieval bridges still visible in France. Its present state and preservation now depend on the local authorities, owners of the monument.
