Seigneur de Castelbajac - Feudal Lord Mentioned in the act of 1218.

Origin and history

The castle of Hèchettes is a medieval building whose existence is attested from the twelfth century. It is located in the hamlet of Hèchettes, close to the Saint-Pierre church, on the town of Hèches, in the Neste valley. This castle, typical of the defensive architecture of the time, is mentioned for the first time in an act of gratitude of the inhabitants towards the lord of Castelbajac in 1218. This historical document confirms its role in local feudal relations.

The current structure of the castle includes a rectangular, 18.5-metre high watch tower. This tower, pierced by a single door located 7 meters from the ground on its southern façade, still houses intact elements, including a vault above a oblivion. These architectural features illustrate the defence and surveillance techniques used in the Middle Ages in the Pyrenees.

Located in the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées, in the Occitanie region, the castle of Hechettes is set in a landscape marked by the Pyrenean valleys and the seigneurial dynamics. In medieval times, castles like this served as strategic points for controlling territories and protecting local populations, while symbolizing the power of lords over their vassals.
