Origin and history

Haussmann Castle, located in Cestas en Gironde, owes its name to Baron Haussmann, the first owner of the building. Originally, the Haussmann couple owned a chartreuse on this site, inherited from Mrs. Haussmann's parents. After their death in 1862, the Baron and his wife decided to completely rebuild the building, marking the beginning of an ambitious architectural project.

The plans of the new castle were entrusted to Victor Baltard, renowned architect, while the construction was led by Henri Duphot. The building, rectangular, is organized around a ground floor and two floors under the roof, with semi-hexagonal forebodys on the north and south facades. The outbuildings, including a polygonal castle, stables and a wine cellar, complete the whole.

The Haussmann Castle was partly listed as a historical monument on two occasions: in 1975 for its facades and roofs, then in 1989 for the communes and several interior rooms (cage d'escalade, salons, work room). After being removed in 1882, Baron Haussmann wrote his memoirs. The interior is distinguished by a neat decor, mixing stained glass, stucco, panelling and paintings on the top of the door.

Today, the castle remains an architectural testimony of the nineteenth century in Gironde, combining the prestige of its owners with the expertise of its designers. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its external elements and for its rich interior decorations, preserved until today.
