Origin and history

The cross of the Belle Place is a monolithic granite road cross, dated from the 15th century. It is located in Plemy, in the Côtes-d-Armor department, Brittany. This monument was included in the inventory of historical monuments on September 17, 1964. It is located on the edge of departmental road 35, connecting Plougrescunt to Penvénan, and rests on two quadrangular bases.

The cross presents a flat sculpture representing, on one side, a crowned Virgin holding the Child Jesus sitting on a chair, and on the other side, an accompanying Christ in cross. Its architectural style, with arms joined by strips cut up, is characteristic of the Breton crosses of that time. The cross is mentioned in Le Patrimoine des Communes des Côtes-d-Armor (Flohic Editions, 1998) and remains a testimony of local medieval religious art.

Owned by the municipality of Plemy, the cross is referenced in the Merimée database under the code cadastral ZL 19. Its approximate location, according to GPS coordinates, is indicated as 5183 Le Poteau, although its precise location is estimated at a satisfactory a priori level (note 6/10).
