Façades and Roofs (Case C 74): Registration by Order of 3 March 1949
Origin and history
The castle of Betplan, built in the first half of the seventeenth century, is distinguished by its architecture characteristic of the period. It has a rectangular house body framed by four square towers, all covered with slate attices. The main façade, accessible by a balustrade terrace, is marked by an imposing portal adorned with bosses, framed by two doric pilasters supporting a semicircular pediment. The windows, originally equipped with wooden bundles, reflect the sober yet elegant style of the seigneurial residences of this period.
Ranked a Historic Monument, the castle was partially protected by decree of 3 March 1949, specifically covering its facades and roofs. This building illustrates the evolution of noble houses in Gascony, where classical influence begins to mingle with local traditions. The accuracy of its location, assessed as satisfactory a priori, makes it possible to clearly situate it in the landscape of Gers, near Auch.
The building, although partially documented, bears witness to the constructive practices of the early seventeenth century, where the balance between defence and comfort is reflected in elements such as corner towers or carved decorations. Its current status and use (visit, rental, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources, but its registration as a Historic Monument makes it a protected and remarkable heritage of the Occitan region.
