Origin and history
Bénac Castle is located in Barguillière, on the town of Bénac, in the heart of the Ariège department, in the Occitanie region. Built in the 17th century and renovated in the 19th century, it was the home of the barons of Bellissen-Bénac. This monument is located west of the village, in the hamlet of La Pouge, just 9 km from Foix, offering a strategic position in this historic region.
During the French Revolution, the castle was looted. In September 1792 an armed crowd, accompanied by the national guard, attacked several castles in Ariège, including the castle in Bénac. The looters carried away furniture, wood, planks and tiles, in a context of violence and depredation that exceeded official orders. These events are part of a period of unrest marked by home visits authorized by the National Legislative Assembly.
Today, Bénac Castle is an elegant three-level residence, offering guest rooms and an equestrian relay. It is part of a process of valorizing local heritage, with animations and a park dedicated to equestrian activities. This place combines history and modernity, welcoming visitors in a preserved setting.
The castle is also cited in historical works, such as the one revolution to the other: The popular Ariège movements (1789-1848) of Damien Franchini, which recounts the revolutionary events that affected the region. These references highlight its importance in local history and its role as a witness to the upheavals of the time.
