The Fountain of the Dauphin, in total, i.e. with its basin, located on plot 149, on the area AE of the cadastre of the commune: inscription by order of 7 February 2025

Origin and history

La Fontaine du Dauphin, located in Nerac in the Lot-et-Garonne department (New Aquitaine region), is a monument dated from the 1st quarter of the 17th century. It consists of an edicle with its basin, located on plot 149 of the communal cadastre. The exact address, 54bis Nazareth Street, was confirmed by GPS coordinates, although the accuracy of the location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10). This monument has been fully protected since its inscription by decree of 7 February 2025, covering the entire structure.

The fountain is the property of the commune of Nerac, identified by the code Insee 47195. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visit, rental, etc.), its status as a Historic Monument underscores its heritage importance. The available data come mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, supplemented by internal information. No mention is made of a sponsor, architect or specific historical events related to its construction.

The historical context of Nerac in the 17th century is marked by its role as a prosperous city, particularly under the influence of the Dukes of Albret. Public fountains, such as the Dauphin River, played a central role in water supply and social life. Their construction often reflected issues of hygiene, urban beautification or local prestige. However, the archives consulted do not detail the precise motives behind the construction of this monument.
