Origin and history
The Hôtel-Dieu de Baugé, founded in 1643, is a former hospital in the town of Baugé-en-Anjou, Maine-et-Loire. Its origin dates back to the initiative of two influential women: Martha de la Beausse and Anne de Melun, Princess of Flanders, who financed and organized the creation of the house. This monument illustrates the classic hospital architecture of the Ancien Régime, with renovated buildings in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Apothecary, which was equipped in 1675, was managed for three centuries by the apothecary sisters of the Hospitallers of Saint Joseph community. Active up to the 1940s, it reflects the evolution of medical and religious practices. The sisters ensured the operation of the hospital until 1988, which marked a profound social and health history.
Ranked a historic monument in 1993 (after partial inscription in 1990), the Hôtel-Dieu now houses a permanent exhibition on its history, highlighting the role of its founder, Anne de Melun, and the nuns. The façades, roofs, chapel and closing walls of the 17th and 18th centuries are protected, while the gardens and former Priory Saint-Michel complete this remarkable heritage complex.
The site, owned by the municipality, retains educational and tourist value, with access to the apothecary and spaces dedicated to the memory of the care provided, both for the body and for the soul. Its location, between the streets Anne-de-Melun and the Doctor-Zamenhof, makes it a central point of the Angelvin heritage.
