Cross road, on the public square: classification by decree of 24 September 1932

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin d'Aragon is a monumental cross located in the village of Aragon, in the department of Aude, in the Occitanie region. Dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, it is distinguished by its octagonal structure, with branches without decoration at the ends. The drum, also octagonal, is surmounted by a moulded ring, while its base is partially masked by a consolidation stone. The base, in sandstone, rests on two steps and carries sculptures representing Christ on the cross on one side and the Virgin on the Child on the other.

The cross has been classified as historic monuments since 24 September 1932, recognizing its heritage value. It is located in the public square of the village, at the address 2 Place de l'Abreuvoir, and belongs to the municipality of Aragon. This type of monument, typical of medieval roads and the Renaissance, often served as a spiritual or commemorative landmark for travellers and local residents.

Crosses of path, like Aragon, were common in rural areas of Occitanie at that time. They often marked crossroads, village entrances or gathering places, playing both a religious and a social role. Their presence reflected the importance of the Christian faith in everyday life, while serving as a point of reference for pilgrims or travelling merchants.
