Origin and history
La Croix de chemin d'Irigny is a historical monument located in the commune of Irigny, in the Rhône department (69), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated from the 14th century, it is representative of medieval road crosses, often erected at crossroads or along roads to mark a place of prayer or gathering. These monuments played an important role in the religious and social life of rural communities, serving as spiritual landmarks and meeting points.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 June 1928, this cross is specifically mentioned as being situated on the property of Madame Vergoin. The road crosses, like this one, were usually associated with popular devotional practices, such as processions or stops on pilgrimages. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian religion in the organization of territories and movements in medieval times.
