Road crossing in Tuf (Box ZH 38): registration by decree of 26 April 1999

Origin and history

The cross de chemin de Bourseville is a medieval monument in tufa stone, erected on the edge of the road at the exit of the village. It is distinguished by its unique configuration in the Somme department. Its high base, enhanced by a concave net, supports a crown surmounted by a cross with rounded and polylobed ends. The centre of the cross is decorated with engraved circles and radiant semi-circles, characteristic of local medieval art.

Broken and mutilated in the early 1980s, the cross was restored and restored a few metres from its original location. It was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 26 April 1999, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Its present state, although restored, bears witness to the alterations suffered over the centuries, while preserving the original stylistic elements.

The location of the cross, at the approximate address of 690 Rue de Martaigneville, is estimated with satisfactory accuracy (level 7/10). This monument illustrates the importance of the road crosses in the medieval rural landscape, often associated with religious, commemorative or territorial functions. Its material, the tuf, a local porous and light stone, reflects the resources available in the region at that time.
