Origin and history

The Vignerons Fountain is a historical monument located in Thann, Haut-Rhin department, in the Grand Est region. It is distinguished by its construction in several stages, with a lower column dating from the 16th century, while the upper column could be attributed to Michel Berck, who worked there in 1570. The statue, contemporary of this period, could be the work of another artist. These architectural elements reflect the stylistic influences of the 16th and 17th centuries, with a last notable intervention in the 4th quarter of the 18th century.

The fountain is located Place des Vignerons, in the heart of Thann, and was listed as historical monuments by order of 22 March 1934. This monument, owned by the commune, bears witness to the importance of viticulture in the region, a major economic activity since the Middle Ages. Public fountains, like this one, played a central role in daily life, serving as a gathering point and water supply for the inhabitants.

The building thus combines artistic and functional elements, illustrating the evolution of construction techniques and urban needs over centuries. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its anchoring in local history. Today, the Fountain des Vignerons remains a symbol of the cultural and historical identity of Thann and Alsace.
