Forged iron cross: inscription by decree of 13 July 1926
Origin and history
La Croix d'Arzenc-de-Randon is a wrought iron cross located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Lozère, in the region of Occitanie. Dated from the 18th century, it is characterized by a base and a stone base, while its metal structure has a hexagonal barrel becoming square in its upper part. The extremities of the arms and stem are adorned with lily flowers, and its centre features a representation of the crown of thorns, accompanied by a spear and sponge at its base. These symbolic elements evoke the Passion of Christ, typical of the monumental crosses of this period.
The cross has been listed as historic monuments since 13 July 1926, recognizing its heritage value. It is located on the road linking Saint-Amans to Châteauneuf, at the approximate address of 11 Rue de la Coustille. Owned by the municipality, it illustrates the local craftsmanship in ironwork and the importance of religious symbols in the rural public space in the 18th century. Available data from sources such as Wikipedia, Monumentum and the Merimée database confirm its protected status and location, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (level 5/10).
In the 18th century, in Lozère as in other French rural areas, the crossroads or crossroads played a role both religious and social. They often marked gathering places, parish boundaries or prayer points for travellers and peasants. In a context where the Catholic Church strongly structured daily life, these monuments also served as visual and spiritual landmarks. Their work in wrought iron, like that of Arzenc-de-Randon, bears witness to the skills of local blacksmiths, able to work this material to create works that are both functional and artistic.
