Raoul Marot des Alleux - Counselor of the King and Senechal of Dinan
Anoblished by Henri IV, owner of the mansion.
Origin and history
The Alleux mansion is an iconic building located in Taden, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. This mansion illustrates a particular type of medieval Breton construction: the low room manors under frame. This model, often dated from the 14th or 15th century, is characterized by a large room initially surmounted by an apparent walled structure, before being capped probably at the beginning of the 16th century, period to which was added a rear staircase tower.
Although the land of the Allies was free of feudal duties as early as 1480, no nobles were mentioned in the records of the bishopric of Saint Malo or Dol. However, this place was associated with the Marot des Alleux family, which was notable in Dinan at the end of the 15th century. Their social ascent culminated with Raoul Marot des Alleux, king's adviser and Senechal of Dinan, who played a key role in 1598 in helping Henry IV's troops to take over the city, then held by the League. Anobli for his services, he then acquired several properties, including the Château de la Garaye in 1617 and the Château de la Grand'Cour in Taden in 1618.
The Alleux mansion is included in the general inventory of cultural heritage. Its architecture reflects the social and architectural evolutions of Brittany between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, while remaining linked to the local history of Taden and Dinan. The Marot family, through its political and economic influence, embodies the transition from an emerging nobility of robe to an established Earth aristocracy, thus marking the history of this mansion and its region.
