Origin and history

Arcangues Castle, located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is an emblematic monument of the 1st quarter of the 20th century. It was built in 1900 on the site of a 17th century castle, rebuilt after a fire caused by the Spaniards in 1636 during the Thirty Years War. This third building takes over the general plan of its predecessor, with a central body framed by two side pavilions, and incorporates an octagonal round tower inspired by Spanish Basque houses.

The family of Arcangues, owner of the property since the 12th century, marked the history of the estate. In 1813 the castle was occupied by Wellington, an episode related to Napoleonic wars. Inside, the large hall and the room, like the living room decorated with white and gold panelling or the "Spanish" room with painted boxes, reflect the luxurious taste of the 1900s. These spaces, designed for receptions, testify to the social importance of the castle at that time.

Ranked a historic monument since April 2, 1980, the castle of Arcangues combines medieval heritage and eclectic architecture of the early twentieth century. Its inscription protects a heritage both family and regional, where Basque, Flemish and neoclassical influences are mixed. The accuracy of its location is estimated at 6/10, based on available data.
